CLISAP (D3,A3)

Impact of changing ecosystem stucture due to climatic and anthropogenic changes on the function and efficiency of the carbon shelf pump on the Northwest-European Shelf (2009-)

CLISAP flexible pool project research area: D3 (relevant also for A3) (http://www.clisap.de/)

Objectives
The carbon shelf-pump on the Northwest-European Shelf absorbs atmospheric CO2 on the shelf and exports inorganic and organic carbon into the adjacent deep North Atlantic. This mechanism is driven by physical-, chemical and biological processes. Especially phytoplankton sequesters atmospheric CO2. Climatic and anthropogenic changes bear the potential to induce shifts in phytoplankton composition. To which extend such shifts have an impact on the strength of the carbon shelf-pump is investigated in the current project.

Subtasks
·    decadal simulation of the shelf system
·    separation of the different pump mechanisms
·    impact of changing phytoplankton composition

Tools
·    hydrodynamic model HAMSOM
·    ecosystem model ECOHAM4
