Curriculum Vitae

Hermann-Josef Lenhart was born in Grevenbroich, near Cologne, on July 27, 1956. He studied physical Oceanography at the University of Hamburg and received his degree (Dipl. Oz.) in 1990.
His interest in ecological modelling led to an academic year in Canada as a visiting student at the Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia), followed by a practical training at the St. Andrews Biological Station (New Brunswick) in 1981.
Afterwards, he worked between 1985 to 1987 for the federal rivers and waters authorities in Hamburg. There he developed a program for aggregating Aanderaa current measurements of discharge rates in tidal rivers.
He continued his ecological studies with his graduation thesis on the phosphorus budget of the North Sea, based on a primary production model, and is included in the EC-project ERSEM (European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model). In the latter, he took responsibility for the preparation and application of the hydrodynamical model output into the box model, which eventually led to new calculations of the flushing times for the North Sea. Furthermore, he was involved in the compilation of the nutrient budgets within ERSEM as contribution to the LOICZ program.
In ERSEM II, he worked with a refined box model - the COCOA (Continental Coastal Application) version. In preparation for this study, the data of 10 continental rivers were aggregated from the respective national authorities and calculated as daily nutrient loads. In 1999 he received his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in the department of geoscience of the University of Hamburg. His work focusses on the modeling of the effects of reduction scenarios for anthropogenious river loads on the ecosystem of the North Sea. He has been participating in national project SYKON (synthesis and new conception of North Sea reseach).
